Homeowner goals
Monday, October 8th, 2007Homeowners owe it to themselves to be forthright about why they are embarking upon such an important task, according to NYKB’s Perry Hiiman. It’s Perry’s experience that people renovate for all sorts of different reasons and circumstances, though most all are valid. However, having a clear idea of our goals through home renovation greatly in remodeling performance and planning.
Very often renovation is a financial decision. National studies have ranked the best performing home enhancements as per increasing resale value:
1. Remodeling kitchen/bathroom
2. Family room/bathroom addition
3. Master bedroom renovation
Part of selecting the right remodeling project is to be cognizant of the area in which you live. Researching your immediate home sales market. If you live in a “hot” or “up and coming” neighborhood – well, the argument could be made that it is unwise to not undergo renovation. Tip: you can learn a lot by talking to local real estate agents.
But home value is not always the sole goal of home improvement. There is also the quality of life factor. People just love new floors or kitchens. I don’t think anyone reading these words doesn’t already know this. Maybe it’s just ripping out that old tub and installing a whirlpool. Or perhaps a brand new state of the art kitchen. No matter, knowing what you want improved in your home and then getting it is one of the most satisfying joys a homeowner can experience.
Kitchen remodeling
Monday, September 3rd, 2007NYKB’s owner and President, Perry Hiiman, agrees with these Houston professionals who know the importance of a professionally remodeled kitchen to a home’s value.
Although many homeowners have more than one bath, few have multiple kitchens. So it pays to plan your remodel wisely.
Call in a professional consultant, advises Peggy McGowen, owner of Kitchen and Bath Concepts in Houston. “It’s a spend-to-save thing,” McGowen explains. “Even a one-hour consultation will help you avoid mistakes that could cost time and money later.”
She also urges homeowners to spend the most on structural items that are the hardest to replace: cabinets and countertops. “These things take the biggest beating and look the worst the quickest,” she says.
Says Perry: “She’s right, the money a consumer saves by skimping on quality cabinets and countertops will not pay for their replacements! Some might look great and cost-effective in a catalog, but how happy is a consumer when every other door is hanging off or misaligned in a six-month old kitchen? Get a pro to do it!”
Good point, Perry.

And how has your week been? Today NYKB wishes HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Lior Habet, our project coordinator. He multitasks like no other, but is never too busy for a laugh or a good word. Lior comes to us from Israel where he had extensive experience in brand and retail management for Reebok. Lior, a Jets fan, looks forward to going to his first football game this fall. We hope the Jets will not let him down.
Today we also welcome NYKB’s new expeditor, Florence Watson. The lovely Ms. Watson, a Monroe College grad, loves music (especially Beyonce) and is a good cook. Welcome aboard!

Anyway, we are New York City-based full service design/build firm with two Manhattan locations, one on the Upper East side and the other in the Flatiron District. We specialize in kitchen and bath remodeling. (hence the ’KB’ in our name).
We look forward to sharing the fun and hard work of our workplace with readers.
